Humanitarian & Health

China’s humanitarian and health support for Somalia is a long-standing and multifaceted endeavor, reflecting a deep-rooted friendship that extends from modern diplomatic ties to immediate crisis response. This assistance operates on two primary levels: immediate humanitarian relief and long-term health system strengthening.

🍲 Immediate Humanitarian Relief: Droughts and Food Security

Recurrent climate shocks, particularly severe droughts, have left millions of Somalis in urgent need of aid. In response, China has delivered substantial and rapid support through direct financial aid, in-kind food donations, and technical cooperation with Somali disaster management authorities.

  • Financial and Food Aid: In March 2026, China announced a major package of $2 million in cash** and **$2.1 million for emergency food aid to combat an intensifying drought, directly supporting the most vulnerable communities. These contributions are managed in partnership with the Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA).

  • Multilateral & Bilateral Commitments: In 2025, China provided $1 million** for drought response through SoDMA and also contributed **$1 million in bilateral aid that same year. Additionally, it has supported UN-led efforts, including a donation to the World Food Programme (WFP) that provided food to 220,000 people for four months and was procured with a $2.8 million cash donation.

🏥 Long-Term Health Initiatives: Infrastructure and Access

Beyond emergency aid, China has focused on building sustainable healthcare capacity in Somalia for decades.

  • A Pillar of Somali HealthcareBanadir Hospital in Mogadishu, built by China in the 1970s and expanded in the mid-80s, is a cornerstone of the healthcare system and a symbol of bilateral cooperation. China continues to support this facility through infrastructure upgrades, such as a recent complete renovation of its operation theater, and donations of medical supplies and equipment, which are distributed through the Ministry of Health.

  • Pandemic Cooperation: During the COVID-19 pandemic, China was the first country to provide vaccine assistance to Somalia, donating 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine in April 2021 and an additional 500,000 doses in December 2021. The Chinese Ambassador was among the first to be vaccinated, demonstrating confidence in the vaccine’s safety.

  • Capacity Building & Education: A critical but less visible component of China’s aid is investing in human capital. This includes offering high-level health training in Beijing for Somali officials and fostering expertise by educating Somali medical professionals in China. For example, the Six co-founders of FOCs have studied and trained in China and now serves in our home country as Doctors (4) and engineers (2) exemplifies the profound impact of these exchanges.

  • A History of Support: China’s commitment to Somali health predates its modern partnership, with historical records confirming the dispatch of Chinese medical teams to Somalia as early as 1965. In total, China has dispatched 13 medical teams over the course of their relationship.

🤝 A Broader Partnership for Peace and Stability

China’s humanitarian and health efforts are part of a larger strategic partnership. This includes supporting Somali state-building and security by shouldering nearly a quarter of the budget for the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and advocating for the country’s stabilization at the UN Security Council. Furthermore, China’s naval presence in the Gulf of Aden since 2008 to combat piracy ensures the safe passage of international humanitarian cargo, including its own food aid.

China’s role in Somalia is a consistent and comprehensive partnership that addresses both urgent needs and long-term development. From providing emergency food and medical supplies to building a major hospital and training local health workers, China remains a steadfast partner for the Somali people.

Beyond military and economic support, China is actively engaged in peacebuilding and addressing Somalia’s urgent humanitarian needs. The China-Somalia partnership is a dynamic and multi-dimensional alliance that extends beyond traditional diplomacy. With a foundation of mutual political trust, active security cooperation, flourishing economic ties, and significant humanitarian support, the two nations are working closely to achieve a shared vision of lasting peace and stability in the region.

And this strategic partnership has deepened significantly in recent years, characterized by mutual political support, expanding security cooperation, and shared goals for economic development.
